Studio & Production

In short: because it works! I am an engineer by heart and at the same time an amateur composer, I´m playing string instruments and I´m singing, I like to work on graphics, sometimes grab the soldering iron and I like to formulate texts. I see bad and hear well - what else do I need? Shaped by my personal taste in music, which can be pinned down somewhere in the progressive rock of the 70s, I have a main claim to music: It must be interesting - whether harmonic, rhythmic or structural - mainly interesting! I always try to implement that in my own music.

For anyone interested, I have summarized here how I generally proceed when I produce music:

The history of my Recording Studio:

With the production of "Off the darkness" I not only broke new ground musically, but also technically. Nowadays there is a lot of good software available that makes music production possible for everyone.I do the recording and mixing with Cubasis 3 on an Ipad. The big advantage is that the system is extremely mobile and does not require an external power supply - a maximum flexibility! I only connect hardware devices such as synthesizers or effect processors, when I need them. This significantly reduces the installation complexity. Mastering takes place on a PC with Ozone 9.

This focus on the essentials made many old devices obsolete and the studio had to be redesigned from the ground up. At the same time, I invested in the acoustic optimization of the room and made everything a little more homely. Now guests can also listen without only having a standing seat. Here you find a few ideas for building very cheap sound absorption modules (bass traps):

As the picture shows, I used devices from the last millennium - with lots of buttons and lights. The productions were an analog-digital mix. The center device was an Atari Falcon 030. (For those born after 1990: This is a computer that has more years behind it than you ...) With Cubase Audio 2.01, this was one of the first usable hard disk recording systems ever and offered 8 audio channels in CD quality.

Since only two channels were available for recording at the same time, production was only possible with the overdubbing method. That means: first the rhythm, then the bass, guitar, accordion / synthesizer and finally the vocals. One by one. This takes a lot of time, but even without deep audio-producer knowledge, you will get an acceptable result in the end.

I used the system intensively until the production of “Werbepause” in 2018. After a break due to illness in 2020, however, I have decided to separate myself from all legacies and to approach things in a completely different way in the future.

My last production on this system was „Werbepause“ in 2018.
